Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Sadiq dies at 83 in Lucknow

 Notable Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Sadiq died on Tuesday after a prolonged illness in a private hospital in Lucknow. He was 83 and is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter in the hospital.


His son Kalbe Sibtain had confirmed to the media that his father breathed his last at around 10.00 pm on the midnight of Tuesday. Maulana Sadiq was under treatment at the Era Medical College’s ICU from 17 November. Maulana Sadiq was suffering from colorectal cancer with metastasis with severe pneumonia and urinary tract infection.

On Sadiq’s demise, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his deepest condolences to the cleric’s family. The CM said Sadiq’s death was a great loss to mankind. The CM said Maulana Sadiq was called a messiah of the destitute by some while others termed him an embodiment of the Ganga Jamuni  tehzeeb of syncretism.

Speaking of Sadiq, Nawab Jafar Mir Abdullah, a descendant of the royal family of Awadh, told the Hindustan Times that Sadiq was the most secular person of Lucknow.

Known for his lectures during Muharram, Maulana Sadiq was the first to organise a Shia-Sunni namaz in Lucknow. He got his early education from Madrasa Sultan ul Madaris then moved to Aligarh Muslim University for graduation in Arabic. He also did his master’s degree from AMU in Arabic literature and then secured a doctoral degree from Lucknow University. Besides Arabic, Sadiq was proficient in Urdu, Persian, English and Hindi.

The vice-president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Kalbe Sadiq grabbed the headlines in 2017, when he advocated for peace over the Babri Masjid land dispute. He stated that if the Supreme Court verdict was in the Board’s favour, then Muslims should give up their claim on the land.
